Activesync problems [Samsung i320N - 130798]

I received the Samsung from Expansys yesterday but I am having big problems trying to synch with outlook I am running Windows 2000 and Outlook 2000 SP3, I cannot upgrade Outlook because it is a company laptop. I have loaded Activesync 4.1 aswell as 4.2 and 4.5 but cannot synch with any, the phone connects and it states retrieving settings but then it sticks on that and a few minutes later comes up with cannot sync error message.

I have successfully synced my Dell PDA and another Windows mobile 5.0 smartphone in the past any suggestions gratefully recieved, I don't think it is a firewall problem as aI have disabled these.
